What is Suiseki?

A Suiseki is a naturally formed stone that is admired for its beauty, shape, and ability to suggest a scene or object in nature — such as a mountain, island, waterfall, or animal. Originating in Japan (and influenced by earlier Chinese “scholar’s rocks”), Suiseki are appreciated as a form of natural art rather than being carved or altered. The stones are typically displayed on wooden bases called daiza or in shallow trays called suiban, often with sand or water to enhance their appearance. The art of Suiseki emphasizes simplicity, balance, and the subtle beauty of nature, inviting quiet reflection and imagination in the viewer.
